A car that's racing over a website: how do you do that?

Posted on July 27, 2021

Whoever clicks the fastest wins the car. Very cool!

In his years at Weborama, our Bastiaan has seen many startling projects pass by. But if he has to pick one favorite, it's the so-called BannerBahn.

To launch the Volkswagen GTI, something really big was devised. At an airport, a track had been painted over which the car raced. The websites were also painted on the route.

'And that race was shown live, so that you could see the car tearing through the banners on four different sites in real time. From NU.nl to De Telegraaf and on to AutoWeek and Geen Stijl. The race was at 12 noon. The viewer had to click on the car, you had to be faster than the new GTI!'

BannerBahn was a technical monster job!

'You have to build in all kinds of things so that people can't hack. Making sure they couldn't manipulate the click or whatever. And everything had to run in sync. There were many technical issues involved! That's the cool stuff. BannerBahn also won the Webbie. That's the Oscar in the banner world. It is very nice to prove what is possible with such a project.'
